Zakawsay is a technical initiative focused on developing applied experimental solutions for the valorization of glass waste in an insular territory.

Its purpose is to generate verifiable technical evidence that reduces operational uncertainty regarding the local transformation of recycled glass on San Cristóbal Island – Galápagos.

Its intervention does not replace municipal waste management but acts as a technical complement aimed at:

Assessing operational feasibility
Measuring actual energy consumption
Determining functional parameters
Identifying insular technical limitations

The objective is not commercial production, but the production of applicable technical knowledge.

MISSION

Zakawsay’s mission is to develop and implement, from San Cristóbal Island, a comprehensive and sustainable technical model for the responsible utilization of glass managed within the insular territory, through controlled processes of reuse, transformation, and valorization as a raw material, in coordination with the municipal solid waste management system and in compliance with the environmental regulations in force in Galápagos.

Zakawsay assumes a complementary role to institutional management, aimed at reducing the temporary accumulation of glass stored locally and generating verifiable technical evidence regarding its transformation feasibility under specific insular conditions.

The mission incorporates a social and educational component focused on specialized technical training and the progressive creation of opportunities for citizens with Permanent Residency status, promoting dignified work, productive inclusion, and the strengthening of local capacities.

Transversally, Zakawsay integrates environmental education as a strategic axis, fostering shared civic responsibility and the adoption of sustainable waste management practices.

Within this framework, the organization contributes to the sustainable local development of San Cristóbal and establishes technical foundations for the future replicability of the model on other islands of the archipelago.
